Monthly fire and life-safety inspection checklist

The monthly round the AHJ and the insurer will ask you to prove. The people who ask for this record — the fire marshal, the insurer, the owner's attorney after something happens — want the same thing: that someone walked it, monthly, and wrote down what they saw. This is the built-in life-safety monthly template: the visual checks a manager can do, dated and photographed, between the contractors' own inspections.

How to run it

Three passes, in walking order

1

Extinguishers and signs

Every extinguisher present, accessible, gauge in the green, pin in, tag initialled; exit signs lit; egress lighting present.

2

Doors and paths

Fire doors close and latch, nothing propped, corridors and stairs clear, roof and exterior exits open from inside.

3

Panel and sprinklers

Alarm panel normal with no trouble or supervisory light, sprinkler heads unobstructed and not painted, the riser room accessible.

When not to use it

  • — Any test or inspection a code requires a licensed party to perform.
  • — The broader safety and accessibility walk — that is the safety and compliance template.

What goes wrong

  • — Initialling the tag without looking at the gauge.
  • — Skipping the roof exit because it is far.

What this is not

A visual round by building staff. It is not a fire-code inspection, a sprinkler or alarm test, or an extinguisher service, and it does not replace any inspection the authority having jurisdiction or the insurer requires.

The finished report

Every item with its rating, notes and photos; an action-items table by priority; signatures captured on the phone or through a link. No export step. See a finished one before you sign up.

Questions

Life-safety monthly: what people ask

Is this the extinguisher inspection the code requires?

Fire codes commonly require a monthly visual check that can be done in-house and an annual service by a licensed company. This walk is the monthly visual; the annual is the contractor's tag. Confirm what your jurisdiction requires.

Does this replace the alarm or sprinkler inspection?

No. Those are tested and inspected by licensed contractors on schedules set by code and the insurer. This walk notices the trouble light between them.

Where does the record go?

The completed report is dated, photographed and shareable by link; export the year as a ZIP when someone asks for it.
