Pre-drywall walkthrough checklist

Photograph everything you are about to cover up. Once the drywall goes on, the walls keep their secrets for thirty years. The pre-drywall walk is the last chance to see the blocking for the grab bar, the wire where the TV will hang, the duct that was crushed, the window flashed wrong — and to photograph it in place. This is the built-in pre-drywall template, walked with the homeowner when you can.

16 items in 6 areas · the built-in “Pre-drywall walkthrough” template, as it ships

How to run it

Three passes, in walking order

1

Room by room, wall by wall

Framing, blocking and backing where fixtures will go, window and door flashing, fire-blocking and draft stops.

2

The trades' rough-ins

Plumbing supply and drain, electrical boxes and runs, low-voltage, HVAC duct and returns, exhaust routes. Note anything not where the plan says.

3

Photograph by location

One wide photo per wall with a label, plus close-ups of anything that will be argued about later. In the app the photo is tied to the item and the room.

In the app an item can also answer as pass/fail, done/not done or a number, and any Fair or Poor item becomes a work order in one tap. The PDF prints the checklist as shown, with a notes line per item and a signature block.

Want a reminder to run it again?

The download needs no address. If you'd like one email on the day it's due again, leave it here; that's the only email unless you tick the box.

When not to use it

  • — A code inspection — the jurisdiction does that.
  • — The final or warranty walks — separate templates.

What goes wrong

  • — Photographing without a room label in frame or in the note.
  • — Skipping the low-voltage runs because they are not on the plan.

What this is not

The builder's own record. It is not the jurisdiction's framing, plumbing, electrical or mechanical inspection and does not replace any of them.

Questions

Pre-drywall walk: what people ask

Does this replace the municipal framing inspection?

No. The building department inspects to code and signs its card; this is the builder's own record of what is behind the wall and the homeowner's chance to change their mind about an outlet.

Should the homeowner attend?

If they can. It is the meeting that prevents “I thought the outlet was over there.” The report goes to them by link the same day.

How many photos?

More than feels necessary. Storage is cheap and the wall is closed for decades.
